It is our goal to encourage eco-friendly habits. Child care centers produce extreme amounts of waste in the name of convenience. Unrelatedly, it is suggested that 90% of brain growth happens before a child enters Kindergarten. With those things in mind, not only do we want to minimize our footprint as a small community, but we want to model preservation practices during the formative years. Eco-awareness should be habitual. Our center reuses and recycles at every possible opportunity. From 100% recycled trash bags to reusable paper towels and dishware to non-disposable bags for transporting soiled clothing to composting, we hope to be an example for our community. Additionally, we support small businesses at every turn, sourcing many of our supplies locally, second-hand, and via home businesses found on sites like Etsy. We also further recycle typically-wasted items via Ridwell.
Ivy Blossom makes every effort to ensure a virtually non-toxic environment. We tend to a small organic garden in our yard and our menu boasts completely organic foods. We choose non-plastic toys, plates, cups, water bottles, etc. whenever possible. We sanitize our facility with non-toxic products and use non-toxic hand soaps, laundry detergent, and dish cleansers. We also outsource our drinking water to ensure that it is free of chlorine and other common contaminants.
We do not subscribe to any one methodology of learning. Rather, we pull from different teaching and developmental practices to create an environment that nurtures the whole child first. Our toys and activities heavily focus on creativity and self-expression. Our art supplies will be constantly available but not structured. This is not an environment where you can count on seeing tons of copy-and-paste art coming home. It is our goal to foster empathy, confidence, self-care, self-control, patience, and creativity BEFORE expecting academic success. Pulling from Montessori and Waldorf concepts, we nurture the whole child and let curiosity fuel academic learning. We will provide ample opportunity for daily learning of letters, numbers, name-writing, etc. We reinforce these concepts using whole body movements, cooking, play, and situational conversation.
Acknowledging how other people feel is at the root of all healthy communication. Empathy is a learned behavior even though the capacity is inborn. Empathy is not acquired through telling children what to do and how to think. It is acquired through modeling behaviors and constant conversation about how people feel in any given situation. It is our commitment to keep this conversation ongoing.
Play comes only secondary to considering others’ feelings. Play is the most important work of a child. Our program is primarily play-based. It is where children experiment with ideas, social concepts, obtain feedback, learn cause-and-effect, and problem-solve. No amount of teaching can render the same results as what is learned by doing.
